The Mystery Recording!

All you had to do was listen to the recording below, try to work out what the recording is of and what exactly was happening. The correct answer won a CD!

Many people were convinced that the bangs were detonators and, therefore assumed that it was either a re-opening train on a preserved line or a last train in BR steam.

Out of all the entries I only received two essentially correct answers but the free CD was won by Mr. G. Cooper of Winchester who in addition to getting the general details right also gave the date and time. Hard luck Steve!
There were a couple of amusing answers sent in. Unfortunately since they could be considered libelous, or perhaps I mean slanderous, whatever, I'm not taking the risk of repeating them here!
Thanks for all the entries - if I get another suitable recording I'll do this again.

The correct answer is below.

The mystery recording was made at Porthmadog on the Ffestiniog Railway as Double Fairlie 'Earl of Merioneth' departed soon after 6 pm with a very well loaded train on Sunday 25th August 2002.

For the past few years the Lions Club have organised a special train during evening of the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday to Tan-y-Bwlch and back. The event being titled the Great Little Train Robbery and having a Wild West theme. The recording is of this train loaded with Cowboys, Cowgirls and even a few Indians all apparently well armed with toy pistols. At least I hope that they were toys as the sound of gunfire suggests that a few Indians didn't even make it across the Cob let alone to the barbecue at Tan-y-Bwlch, probably renamed Tan-y-Gulch for the evening!
