Run Pasts (or should that be Runs Past?)

Once a common part of main line steam railtours these seem to have fallen pray to the great god Health & Safety, indeed photo stops seem to be a bit of a rarity nowadays.
Back in the early 80's no railtour was complete without at least one run past and I recall the Welsh Marches route often provided no fewer than three. Although these were primarily intended to provide a photographic opportunity they also gave the on-train sound recordist the chance of a line side recordings.
Abergavenny was a particular favourite of mine where despite the main road running alongside some excellent recordings could be made.
A frequent performer on the bottom leg of a Welsh Marches Pullman was 4930 'Hagley Hall' which, although from a performance point of view often left something to be desired, could always be relied upon to make lots of noise as can be heard in this recording made on 19th February 1983. As the train passes the home signal clatters back into place and the signalman begins to set the road ready for the train to depart for Hereford.

The other regular spot for run pasts during a run down the Welsh Marches was Craven Arms. In this recording we hear 5051 'Drysllwyn Castle' produce some excellent sound effects whilst performing a run past in the southbound direction on 9th April 1983.

The other train which saw plenty of run pasts was the Cumbrian Mountain Express which, in the early 80's had steam haulage from Carnforth to Skipton, later Hellifield, with a second engine taking over for the run to Carlisle (or vice versa). A northbound working would usually stop at Wennington and, if time allowed, perform a few run pasts. On the 12th March 1983 Black 5 5407 was the loco on the 'bottom leg' and sounded like this at Wennington.

Over the Settle & Carlisle line a number of locations were used for run pasts, the most regular spot being Appleby and there is a recording of 46229 at Appleby on the next page.
One infrequently used location was Armathwaite and in this recording King Arthur, 777 'Sir Lamiel' piloting Black 5 5407 perform a run past while working a southbound Cumbrian Mountain Pullman on 3rd April 1982.

Another infrequently used location was Garsdale. It was a shame because it was a superb spot for a run past! On the occasion when this recording was made 4498 'Sir Nigel Gresley' was in charge of a southbound Cumbrian Mountain Express on 2nd October 1982. For each run past the loco and train set back out of sight almost all the way into Moorcock Tunnel before returning through the station at speed. Now that is what I call a run past.
