Something For Sim Users

Over the past months I've had quite a lot of feedback from users of Microsoft Train Simulator and BVE usually asking permission to use sound clips from this site in connection with these sims.
I am quite happy for short sections of my recordings to be used in this way providing the result isn't going to be sold for personal gain and that, where appropriate, there is an acknowledgment of the source of the sound recording.
So, this page is a bit of an experiment.
As I'm not a user of MSTS and have only dabbled briefly with BVE (steam driven computer not fast enough to cope!) I'm not entirely certain of what is required but I would guess that the idea is to use short clips recorded at various speeds looped to provide the sounds.
Below you will find 8 files that you can download and use.
Regular visitors will not be surprised to find that these on train recordings are all of my favourite Black 5, 5305.

The first track which, even if you are not a sim user, is well worth listening to is of 5305 departing from Keighley with a charter train for Carlisle on 8th March 1986.
It features the Guard's whistle, the locomotive whistle and takes us up to about 25 mph.

The remaining 7 short sections of about 30 seconds each provide recordings at various speeds up to around 70 mph.
You can right click on the links below (or the Play button above) to download a copy on to your PC or just click on them to listen.

5305 at 20 mph, 30 mph, 40 mph, 50 mph, 55 mph, 60 mph and 70 mph.

These recordings were all made on a Scarborough Spa Express during the evening of 26th August 1984 between York & Leeds. The first 4 tracks are part of a recording made leaving York and the remaining three between Church Fenton and Garforth.
This particular run was the fastest that I ever recorded between Leeds and York occupying only a few seconds more than 27 minutes. A remarkable performance!
If you want to read more about this run have a look at this page in the steamsounds archive.
